Get in the game and learn more about environmental regulation
and your energy.
Keeping you informed
Environmental compliance is changing quickly, and we are committed to working with our customers, shareholders and business partners so that everyone understands the impacts. As current rules are finalized and new rules are proposed, we will continue to provide you with additional information.
Environmental regulations
Environmental regulations require significant investment in equipment to comply. Our customers are impacted by these increasing costs, as the portion of the bill they pay for environmental compliance continues to increase with the implementation of currently proposed rules. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently announced two regulations that will require us to make additional investments in order to comply with these regulations as we continue to provide safe, reliable electricity to the customers we serve. We are in the process of assessing compliance options with the EPA Hazardous Air Pollutant rules, known as the Industrial Boiler rule and the Electric Generating Unit rule. Our objective will be to comply in the most cost-effective way possible to meet the environmental standards and to continue to provide safe, affordable and reliable electricity to our electric customers.
We believe in a balanced energy portfolio that includes coal, natural gas, energy-efficiency measures, and renewables such as solar and wind. But the fact is that wind and solar alone cannot provide the 24/7 service needs of our customers. Unfortunately, the sun doesn’t always shine, and the wind doesn’t always blow.
Customers
Taking care of our customers is smart business. We care about the communities we serve because these communities are our homes, too. Our company and our employees donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to charitable organizations, and we volunteer hundreds of hours within our communities. We partner with our communities to create economic development opportunities that stimulate job creation and local businesses. And we want clean air, land and water for our customers and the thousands of employees and their family members who live in the communities we serve.
Stewardship
We are good stewards of the environment. We were the first U.S. company to use water-conserving technology that uses 90 percent less water than a traditional power plant. Our scaled approach to building power plants allows us to use the newest environmental technology, and our mine-mouth coal provides a lower overall impact to the environment because it doesn’t require additional transportation. Our energy-efficiency and demand side management programs help our customers make smart choices about their energy usage. We have integrated renewable generation, including wind and solar, as a part of a balanced generation portfolio.
As these issues continue to evolve, we will strive to keep you informed.
