Our Team

Black Hills Energy offers professional economic development assistance for communities in our service territory. Our team of experienced and trained professionals are dedicated to assisting our communities and businesses in a variety of activities from site selection to finance. Serving as “information brokers” we cut through time-consuming and expensive searches to provide the best solutions to meet the needs of business and community leaders.

Dan Smith - Colorado Electric
Dan Smith is the Director of Economic Development and Customer Relations for Black Hills Energy, Colorado Electric. He is responsible for Economic Development, Renewable Energy Programs, Energy Efficiency Programs, Large Volume Accounts and Unregulated Businesses, including Technical Electric Services and the Service Guard appliance repair business. Dan has more than 34 years of experience in the utility business, and 15 years in marketing and economic development. Dan moved to Pueblo from Kansas City in 2008, where he held a similar position with Aquila, Black Hills Energy’s predecessor company. Dan holds a Bachelor's degree from Auburn University and is a Certified Energy Manager.

Mike Fastenau - Iowa
Mike joined Black Hills Energy in 2005 and has more than 27 years of economic development experience, including 20 years in various leadership roles with the Iowa Department of Economic Development. Mike began his economic development career as a Field Service Representative for nearly four years at the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. He earned his bachelor's degree in economics at the University of Nebraska. Mike serves 130 communities throughout the state.

Gabe Schlickau - Kansas and Colorado Natural Gas
Gabe joined Black Hills Energy in 2004 as a customer relations representative for Kansas Gas and Colorado Gas and in that role has gained a broad understanding of gas utility marketing and economic development. He previously worked for the Kansas Department of Commerce and Kansas State University Research and Extension. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in animal science and industry from Kansas State in 2002 and is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute.

Cheryl Brandenburgh - Nebraska
Cheryl Brandenburgh joined Black Hills Energy in May 2011 as Director of Economic Development-Nebraska. Prior to joining Black Hills Energy, Cheryl worked for the State of Nebraska Department of Economic Development where she was first business recruitment manager and then site selection manager. Before that, she was economic development manager for the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce and senior marketing coordinator for Vishay in Columbus, Neb., and Norfolk, Neb.

Brandenburgh has a bachelor's in business administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a master's in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma Economic Development Institute and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organizational Management, and is a Certified Economic Developer through the International Economic Development Council.
