Cheyenne Prairie Generating Station

Project Status

On Nov. 1, 2011, Black Hills Power and Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power filed for a certificate of public convenience and necessity with the Wyoming Public Service Commission to construct and operate a new natural gas-fired electric generation facility within the Cheyenne city limits. If approved by the Wyoming Public Service Commission, construction would begin in 2012, and the facility would begin serving customers in 2014.
We are currently undergoing the industrial siting permit process in Cheyenne. The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality stipulates any large projects such as this needs approval to move forward. The Jurisdictional Meeting was held Dec. 8, 2011. Many studies are being conducted in conjunction with this permitting process. These studies include environmental, noise, endangered species, and cultural impact. The formal application is expected to be filed in March 2012.

We’re also securing appropriate state and government environmental permits. We submitted the Greenhouse Gas Application to EPA in September 2011 and the Air Construction application to WDEQ in October 2011. All applications are expected to be approved and permits issued by the third quarter of 2012.
